Lo Slamdance Film Festival è un film festival che si tiene annualmente nello Utah, riservato ai films indipendenti. Fondato nel 1995, è iniziato come un piccolo evento chiamato “Anarchy in Utah”, poi crescendo è diventato palcoscenico per la scoperta di talenti nuovi ed emergenti nell'industria cinematografica internazionale. Lo Slamdance è unico, in particolar modo perché la competizione nella sezione lungometraggi è limitata a films realizzati con budgets inferiori a 1 Milione di Dollari US e che rappresentano opere prime, ossia di registi esordienti.
Quest'anno il festival si è svolto dal 20 gennaio al 29, caratterizzato da una serie di film indipendenti da registi emergenti. Uno dei film che ha ricevuto più applausi è "Cortez", storia che narra di un musicista in un momento di bassa notorietà nella sua carriera. La sua vita fuori controllo, il suo nuovo album “Tanking”, e le vendite basse dei biglietti cancellano le sue date del tour. Il musicista Jesse (Arron Shiver) decide di lasciare il suo manager e, mentre viaggia sulla strada per il New Messico, cerca la sua vecchia fidanzata (Cheryl Nichols). Una volta incontrati, cominciano a riaccendere la vecchia fiamma sopita, ma ben presto Jesse viene a sapere che Anna ha nascosto un segreto, uno di quelli che altera in modo permanente il corso della sua vita. Nel tentativo di raddrizzare la nave della sua vita che affonda, Jesse va alla deriva nella loro vita, lasciando noi con la voglia di voler vedere e di voler sapere di più su di loro, dopo che il film ha mostrato tutti i suoi crediti. Questo film malinconico ha come co-protagonisti Cassidy Freeman ( "Smallville"), Judith Ivey ( "L'avvocato del diavolo") e Drago Šumonja ( "Black Wedding").
Nella storia dello Slamdance possiamo annoverare l’attrice, sceneggiatrice e regista Lena Dunham (rinomata per aver creato, interpretato e prodotto la serie televisiva Girls sul canale HBO), con il suo primo cortometraggio, “Dealing”, del 2007. Ma anche Christopher Nolan con il film “Following”, Steven Soderbergh, Larry Clark e molti altri. Il primo italiano a parteciparvi è stato il film “L'ultimo pastore” di Marco Bonfanti.

The Slamdance Film Festival has been running concurrently with the Sundance Film Festival for decades now. Established in 1995 this celebration of film began as an event called Anarchy in Utah, and grew into what is now an organization fostering the development of innovative filmmakers year round. Each January Slamdance highlights some of their best – filmmakers who might have otherwise gone unnoticed – screening their work right at the top of Main Street in the middle of Park City.
This year Slamdance ran from January 20th to the 29th and featured a host of independent feature films from emerging storytellers. One of the films they shown a spotlight on was “Cortez,” about a musician coming to a slowdown in his career who seems to accidentally seek out an old flame. His life spiraling out of control, his new album tanking, and low ticket sales canceling the rest of his tour dates, self-involved musician Jesse (Arron Shiver) decides to wander off from his handler/manager and, while on the road in New Mexico, seeks out his old girlfriend (Cheryl Nichols). They begin to rekindle the old flame, falling into the easy company of former lovers, but soon Jesse learns that Anne has been hiding a secret – one that will permanently alter the course of his life. In an attempt to right the sinking ship of his life, Jesse finds he does no better taking a turn at domesticity. Jesse drifts into their lives and drifts out, leaving us wanting to see more of them after the film rolls its credits. This melancholy movie co-stars Cassidy Freeman (“Smallville”), Judith Ivey (“The Devil’s Advocate”) and Drago Sumonja (“Black Wedding”).
The performances are genuine and the fact that Nichols and Shiver are real-life partners works in their favor, each comfortable in their character’s skin. Cheryl Nichols also directed the piece which showcases the wild and gorgeous southwestern landscape. Nichols previously directed “The Living Worst,” about a 30-something who makes a connection with an out-of-town visitor at her bachelorette party. Aaron Shiver is best known for his appearance in the third season of “Boardwalk Empire” as mobster Dean O’Banion. Shiver has also appeared in “The Men Who Stare at Goats,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and “The Book of Eli.” Language: English. Running Time: 1:39.
